Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is the process of systemically applying intervention based upon the principles of learning theory to improve socially significant behaviors to a meaningful degree (Baer, Wolf, & Risley, 1968). In other words, ABA is the science of human behavior to create a meaningful or socially significant change.
ABA focuses on behaviors that are observable and measurable in respect to their antecedents and consequences. Antecedent is defined as events that happen before the behavior and consequences are events that happen immediately after the behavior. By understanding the antecedents and consequence of behaviors, applied behavior analysis can determine how to either increase the occurrence of behaviors or decrease occurrence of behaviors through reinforcement or punishment. Reinforcement is defined as adding or removing a stimulus to increase a behavior while punishment is adding or removing a stimulus to decrease a behavior. ABA not only teaches skills, but helps clients generalize and maintain these skills across behaviors, settings, and individuals.
One of the main goal of ABA is to make a socially meaningful improvement in the family's and child's life. In order to achieve this meaningful change, WDB equips parents and family members with the necessary toys to help teach and respond to the everyday reality of raising a child on the autism spectrum.
